Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) claims the lives of over 6000 babies yearly, with more than 900 of these deaths caused by soft baby crib bedding. Which brings up the question of safety for your infants mattress.
When you place the baby on her belly, her head may sink into the mattress and cause suffocation if the bedding is too soft. Despite being comfortable for babies, soft mattresses may be dangerous for little ones. They might not have the strength to roll over to recover from the dangerous position and the fatal accidents might happen if no one is around to take good care of the little one and as infants are too weak, when their heads are being placed on the soft mattress.
parents can select a baby nursery bedding with a firm mattress that does not get depressed easily when some weight is being applied on it in order to avoid accidents. You can test this by pressing on the mattress to see if it may be too soft. The higher the resistance rating of your mattress is, the higher the quality.
Bumper pads are often added to a crib to give it a designer look; but a baby can suffocate if he becomes stuck with his face pressed into one.
Parents need to use extra care and take precautions during this period since the infants are weak and vulnerable. Although there are still some that say bumper pads are okay if you buy the firmer ones, the majority opinion is to remove them completely. There have been reports of suffocation with the baby pressed between the bumbers and another object in the crib, and also of strangulation by the strings of the bumper pads.
Another danger to the baby’s well-being are toxic gases, detected inside of mattresses by researchers. Hazardous chemical, fire retardant compounds (phosphorous and arsenic) have been found in mattresses. These chemicals can react with others and release poisonous gases; if an infant breathes too much of these, he can die while sleeping in his crib.
It’s ironic but the fungus sometimes found in a baby’s bedding, that we thought is harmful, is actually the one helping to release poisonous gases according to some findings. Do note use nursery bedding which may contain fungus. This may happen if the bedding has been used for a long time. To insure that no fungus is present, parents should be sure to buy new bedding for each new infant. Added to that, rather than an old used nursery bedding, a new one looks much beautiful.
In addition, there is some concern about synthetic fabric in baby bedding sets. While there is no solid proof that synthetic fabrics are harmful to a baby, you may want to stick to natural fibers. There are plenty of stylish cotton nursery bedding sets available (one of my favorites is the Maya baby bedding set by Trend Lab), so there is no need to sacrifice style for safety.
Use this criteria to determine if your baby bedding is safe. One should immediately get a safe mattress bedding, so as to sleep without tension for the baby whole night. Also , the baby can sleep well.
