Helen was what you would call an eccentric outgoing person. She took great fun in being strange, and not just peculiar, off in the distance anywhere, but at the big celebration and on stage. Most eccentric people that I have ever meet, have been mostly withdrawn, and to some level, only perilous to themselves. Not Helen.
To give you an hint, she had just bought about 30 car seat covers. For what you might ask? Exactly. Well, it was almost October, and in her mind, that was when everyone would need to replace their welcome mats. What? Exactly. She considered that when fall would set in, that was confidently the season to replace these things. She took each one and when we all gathered together for the celebration this year, she would have one of these car seat covers custom embroidered to become your new welcome mats.
Why not just buy new mats and be done with it? That wasn’t necessarily the strangest thing about this story. When we all gathered together that weekend, and she whipped out these spectacles of dread, you would not believe what she had had embroidered into the front of them. “Welcome Back Carter.” That was another thing, she had never left the Carter administration. Yes, she enjoyed the T.V series, but the mats were representative of her inability to pass on from, what she thought was the best Presidency ever.
Don’t get me wrong, we all loved her dearly, but sometimes she has us all confused. Those car seat covers never made it to their destinations for the most part, but neither did any of us.
