Cleaning your house is not about vanity, yes it does make the place look a lot nicer which is an added bonus, but the real reason for cleaning should be to keep down the level of allergens in the air and to help kill the nasty germs you can find in places like the bathroom which could make you ill. I think the kitchen is one of the most important places to keep clean on a regular basis (followed closely by the bathroom) because it is the focal point of any house and all the food you bring in can pick up or spread germs around, so make sure you use an antibacterial spray on your sides every day and put dirty crockery away rather than let it fester on the side.
The bathroom is a bit trickier, but I use an antibacterial spray on the walls, floors and around the toilet, and then bleach inside the toilet. That process should help kill the majority of any nasty bugs that you will find there, and another important thing to do is change your towels regularly as when they get damp they can breed bacteria.
Elsewhere in the house then the main problems is dust which is dead skin, dust mites and a whole host of other dirt. Lots of people just run a duster over their units, but really you need to have polish on your duster to help trap the dust, then take your duster outside and shake it to get the dust out of the house, otherwise it is just going into the air and will settle down again within an hour.
Your carpets hold onto a lot of dirt and dust as well, but even a cheap vacuum cleaner like the Hoover U5140-900 can take care of that for you, although if you have ingrained dirt you might want something which can shampoo the carpets like the Hoover F5914-900. If you are not doing all of the above (and more) then you really need to think about setting aside a day every month to do some cleaning.
