Pest and vermin control in Lancashire, Manchester and Cheshire has seen a brisk start in 2010 which is somewhat unexpected given the somewhat colder (weather of this last winter|winter of 2009/10}.
Pest controllers were kept occupied with the usual city centre rats and mice infestations all thoughout the winter of course, but the relatively cold late winter has already seen some ant infestations reported.
The damp summers of the last few years were not to the benefit of the hymenoptera (wasps, bees and ants) but 2010 looks like it will turn out to be a busy year for flying ant callouts.
Frequently ants make their nests under the floors of buildings and inside cavity walls causing a large number of foraging ants to enter kitchens and food cupboards.
However it is at the annual mating time when they are at their most annoying as they produce winged males and winged queens which then mate on the wing.
The emergence of many thousands of these flying ants inside houses can be horrible in the extreme.
A relatively new pest was quite troublesome in the Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester area last season, the Varied Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbasci).
It was rare for pest controllers in Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire to come across these pests until lately but they seemed to arrive from nowhere in 2008 and already this spring has seen sightings of these beetles in large numbers.
They have a similar life cycle to moths their larvae, known as woolly bears can eat natural fibres and can do substantial damage to carpets and any fabrics. They can be a difficult and tricky pest to eradicate.
Those involved in pest control note that Bed Bugs are carrying on their come back in the Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire area, often arriving as hitch-hikers in the suitcases of returning travellers.
Regularly the first reaction of unfortunates who realise that they have been infested with these horrific,blood-sucking insects is to get rid of the old beds and get.
This is a costly mistake as despite their name bed bugs not only hide in beds and in an infested room will be found everywhere within about five yards of the bed, in cupboards, drawers etc, even in electrical wall sockets and the new beds are instantly re-infested.
Many people mistake bed bugs with dust mites which are not visible to the naked eye. They both take a different type of gatley pest control.
They dine exclusively on blood which they syphon from their sleeping victims. People often associate bed bugs with unhygienic conditions but nothing could be less true, they do not require dirt, they eat you!
