Pest and vermin control in the North West has seen a brisk this year which is somewhat surprising given the somewhat cold winter of 2009/10.
Pest operatives were kept working with the usual town centre rats and mice infestations all thoughout the winter of course, but the relatively cold early spring has already seen some ant infestations coming in.
The wet summers of 2008 and 2009 were not to the benefit of the hymenoptera (wasps, bees and ants) but 2010 looks like it will be a active year for ant calls.
Usually ants make nests under the floors of houses and inside cavity walls causing a large number of foraging ants to visit kitchens and food cupboards.
However it is at their mating time when they can be most annoying as they produce winged queens and males which then mate on the wing.
The release of several thousands of these winged ants inside homes can be horrific indeed.
A fairly new pest was very prevalant in the Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester area last year, the Varied Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbasci).
It was unusual for pest controllers in Lancashire, Manchester and Cheshire to deal with these pests until recent times but they seemed to appear from nowhere in 2008 and already this year has seen reports of varied carpet beetle in substantial numbers.
These beetles have a similar life cycle to moths their larvae, called woolly bears can eat natural fibres and can do great damage to carpets and any fabrics. They can be a difficult and tricky pest to eradicate.
Bed Bugs are continuing their return in the Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester area, regularly arriving as stowaways in the suitcases of home-coming holiday makers.
Very often the first reaction of those unfortunates who realise that they have been infested with these hideous,blood-sucking creatures is to get rid of the old beds and buy new.
This is an unneccesary mistake as despite their name bed bugs do not just stay in beds and in an infested room will be found anywhere within around fifteen feet of the bed, in cupboards, drawers etc, even in electrical wall sockets and the new beds become rapidly re-infested.
Most people confuse bed bugs with dust mites which are not visible to the naked eye.
They dine just on blood which they take from their sleeping hosts. People usually associate bed bugs with dirty conditions but nothing could be further from the truth, they do not require squalor, their food is you!
