Ants in the house are the scourge of many homes in summer leaving many people to dread the summer and the annual flying ants invasion which they expect the summer will herald
Only the unfortunate people who have suffered it will realise the true effects of flying ants in their own homes.
Having an infestation of ordinary wingless ants is bad enough but when they go through their annual mating phase the position can become intolerable.
Ants regularly form colonies in the sub-floor areas and in the wall cavities of our homes and these colonies will survive for many years if left untreated and become progressively more persistent every year.
Our dwellings are warm and dry and make the perfect places for a growing ant colony; even solid hard floor is not a hindrance to and ant colony.
Our central heating systems maintains their metabolism even in the winter months and my earliest ant call-out was on my birthday, which falls in January!
Ants need a sandy soil and there are lots of areas in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester which produce more ant callouts than most, Southport, Blackpool, Bolton, Sale & Altrincham come to mind as hot ant properties.
Unfortunately it is when they are in their mating phase that they are most troublesome. Here in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester this usually is pretty often around the middle to end of July.
Ants mate in flight and sometime around mid-summer the colony releases flying immature Queens and flying males which in nature would fly off and mate whilst flying. Many thousands of these winged ants are produced by each and nests tend to synchronise their production in order to mate with ants from neighbouring.
Normally this process starts after a period of days of hot, dry weather and will typically continue for about seven to ten although smaller releases will continue throughout most of the summer months.
Unfortunately when the colony is built under the floor of the home the results can be dreadful, literally thousands of flying are released into the lower rooms, collecting on windows as they head for the light.
This can be extremely upsetting for some people leading to severe emotional trauma to the extent that people learn to loath the summertime and have actually left their house to escape the plague of ants which they know will come each summer.
The colder summers of the last three years has meant that ant jobs were down on earlier but ants seem to have a way of catching up and 2010 might be a particularly troublesome year.
A lot of people who have this problem opt for DIY solutions with powders from hardware stores etc but mostly these efforts are doomed to failure as they are not getting to the heart of the problem which is the colony itself, hidden away safely in the cavity wall or under the floor.
Fortunately for a lot of people help.
At Harrier Pest Control (subject to satisfactory site) we are able to remedy this problem and give an extendable 3 year guarantee.
The treatment which is carried out mainly from the outside of the dwelling, is perfectly safe for animals and children and produces no smell, involves drilling small holes into the cavity walls of the property, not unlike a damp-proof course injection and blowing a long lasting insecticide into the cavity wall under pressure.
This forms an uncrossable barrier through which the ants cannot cross and along with a precautionary internal spray treatment (if deemed necessary) will gradually bring the problem to its end.
The holes, which are only 8mm in diameter stay open so it is simply a matter of topping up the cavities every 3 to extend the effectiveness of the guarantee in three year terms.
This procedure is best done out in the early spring however it can be done all year round.
As a very limited time offer before our busy period begins we are offering 25 percent off the normalstandard cost until May 30 2010. Whilst we normally cover the whole of Lancashire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester, we are able to venture further afield but this will be at extra cost.
