The Google Webmaster console now permits you to see most, but not all, of the backlinks that Google has found for the site. Matt Cutts, who’s the Google guru on backlinks and SEO, has acknowledged that Google does not show 100% of the back links but says that how many links it does show is supposed to grow over the next almost a year. That is about as specific because he gets on exchanging links.

If you go to your Google Webmaster console you will most likely see more links in your site, maybe possibly 10 times more links, then you’ll see with all the link: command from your Google search page. Again, Cutts provides no real explanation of why that may be so.

It’s also possible to download your Google backlinks in a very great CSV format if you want to slice and dice them for additional analysis.

Perhaps the key amount of information that we get from Matt Cutts on his blog is the fact even if you observe a back link from Google that is not to mean that backlink is carrying any ranking weight with Google. He emphasized that in bold letters two separate times but wouldn’t normally provide a scintilla of knowledge on why some backlinks carry weight with Google while many tend not to.

It’s unfortunate that Matt Cutts would not explain extra about why backlinking is a casino game because even a simple explanation may well save many people huge amounts of your time but not an inconsiderable cost if we knew earlier whether we’d be wasting our efforts with any particular aspect of our back-links strategy.
