If trekking is not your forte and wish to be driven only, include Pokhara in your Nepal itinerary. Located below the Annapurnas and the fish-tail mountain of Machapuchare, Pokhara at the serene lake Phewa will keep you stay longer than you planned. Your overland journey of Kathmandu Valley and Pokhara is best combined with a visit to one the world’s most unique national parks, the Royal Chitwan, for the glimpse of superb jungles and the legendary one-horned white rhino.
But it’s the High Himalaya, the adobe of snow, that lures most visitors and trekking is the only way to approach the giants.
If you wish to sample the culture of the Sherpas, consider a soft trek in Solu, the lowers of the Sherpa regions – you can fly to Phaplu or trek from Jiri. If you’d like to combine trekking and meditation, consider a Meditation Trek, aka the Wisdom Tour, in the Solu region of Nepal’s Sherpaland.
If Buddhism and spirituality is not your focus, and you are after seeing the high peaks up close, head on to Namche Bazaar and Khumbu. Undeniably Everest certainly continues to lure, and most trekkers fly to Lukla and head on to Namche Bazaar from there. But for a more rewarding entry into Khumbu, consider trekking from Dhankuta or Khadbari in Eastern Nepal through Limbuwan, the Land of the Limbus, one of the ancient Nepalese tribes. You just may have the entire trail to yourself, and rewarding trek it is through the fertile and scenic Nepal Midlands, the bread basket of Nepal.
